Biography
Dr. Steyer has served Renner Otto clients from a variety of industries, including many software companies, for more than a decade. He counsels clients in all aspects of their intellectual property, safeguarding their ideas, innovations, and brands. Grant focuses his work on design patent applications, patent applications, prosecutions and appeals. He is especially astute in the subject matter of biomedical and computer arts. Grant previously held the position of Chair of IP Division at a full-service Cleveland area law firm.
Grant has worked with a small startup company to obtain patent protection on inventions related to imaging and control of imaging hardware. The client used the patent family that we accumulated in an IPO to obtain an evaluation of over $160 million.
He worked with a cosmetic company to build a trademark portfolio of over 200 trademark registrations and pending applications. The company was purchased for over $1 billion.
Grant assisted a medical imaging company to protect products using patents and trade secrets, enabling the client to maintain a markup of over 300% on their products.
He created an innovation program with a financial software company to increase patent submissions. Grant achieved this by working directly with employees using automated software to ensure that invention disclosures are prepared and submitted prior to engagements with customers to protect product updates and new products. As a result, the company achieved patent filing increases of over 1000%.
Grant worked with a consumer goods brand to prevent trademark infringement of their brand by removing dozens of counterfeits from Instagram, Twitter, and Amazon.
A graduate of Case Western Reserve University, Grant obtained both a bachelor’s and PhD in Biomedical Engineering, His research focused on medical imaging, machine vision, image processing, medical devices, and machine learning. He has authored several published scientific articles. In obtaining his J.D., Dr. Steyer was awarded Magna Cum Laude from Cleveland State University School of Law, where he was the editor of the Law Review.
Grant is a U.S. Patent and Trademark Office Bar Member and member of the International Trademark Association, Licensing Executive Society International, Cleveland Intellectual Property Law Association and Ohio State Bar Association.
